Since the polarization of water having O-H bond is quite strong, this causes the density of the electron near the atom of hydrogen which tends to be very low and thus the O-H bond is usually weak as compared to many other covalent bonds. The thermal fluctuations in the liquid sometimes causes insufficieent polarization of the O-H bonds which can be dissociated by the hydrogen nucleus considered to be a proton.
