Calcium chloride CaCl2is a very versatile chemical and is also a very basic chemical that is used as diluted solid forms and also as concentrations (DOW, 2014). In terms of its chemical composition it is more similar to Sodium Chloride NaCl. It is called commonly as the rock salt. The versatile use of Calcium chloride stems from three of its chemical properties. Primarily Calcium chloride is hygroscopic. The hygroscopic nature of calcium chloride makes it easier for it to attract moisture from the surroundings. In this it shares properties with Sodium chloride, Sodium Hydroxide and Zinc chloride. This property gives Calcium chloride many practical applications. Another nature of solid calcium chloride is that it is deliquescent (Seddon et al, 2000). Deliquescence is a process where the substance will absorb moisture from the surrounding atmosphere. In absorption, it will dissolve and then become a solution. The reason that deliquescence occurs is because the vapor pressure of the solution will be less compared to the pressure of the water vapor present in the air. When the air is sufficiently humid, carrying moisture, then it will deliquesce (Russell, & Ming, 2002). However, since calcium chloride is also hygroscopic, it does not absorb the water vapor in the air to the point of dissolution; it merely converts to a liquid brine form (Schlegel, & Schönherr, 2001). The third most important property is that of its thermal effects. Solid calcium chloride when it is dissolved in water will release heat by causing an exothermic reaction.
