This was a practical proof of the illegal and unethical data-gathering and monitoring activities carried out on a world-wide scale (Jillian York, 2014).

The WikiLeaks that were involved with leaking some of the government top secrets was a result of an individual hacking into the government agencies. The same method used to retrieve data from civilians was also used in extraction of the WikiLeaks information. Over the recent years, there has been an increased hacking into prominent government officials in which cases their private lives have been exposed to the world.

Surprisingly, there is a section of civilians who do not feel threatened by these activities as they cite that they have nothing to hide. The debate still rages on of the effects of data-gathering and surveillance of citizens.
