Knowledge management is purported to increase innovativeness and responsiveness (Hackbarth1998). Information systems designed to support and augment organizational knowledge management need to complement and enhance the knowledge management activities of individuals and the collectively. To achieve this, the design of information systems should be rooted in and guided by an understanding of the nature and types of organizational knowledge. Different perspectives on knowledge and various knowledge taxonomies were discussed earlier. These discussions highlight the importance of assessing and understanding an organization’s knowledge position and its existing intellectual resources. Such an understanding is needed for formulating a knowledge management strategy and in analysing the role of information technology in facilitating knowledge management.
