In Piano Player Angie’s mother clearly does not love herself much, even though she might have become a prostitute because she had no choice. Maybe she loves Angie, she didn’t do everything on purpose.  Although she didn’t impact Angie in a positive way, and even decided to make Angie stay with her by not letting Angie go to music school and always claims that Angie is a “Mommy’s girl”, is she selfish? She is a chain smoker, she does not care how much of a mess she looks, and her husband left her.She has to bluff by threatening Victoria “you better not get smart with me,” to make her look tough. She doesn’t love herself anymore, she sees herself in Victoria. She notices that Victoria is actually being loved, at least she is being attractive to someone. Victoria’s mother is jealous about all the attention that Victoria is getting. She is dependent on Victoria, because Victoria is the only person she has. And also she feels that there is nobody who needs her. There is nobody for her to lean on anymore other than Victoria, the kid that she give birth to, the only person who needs her, no matter by material or by emotions. She has the desire to be needed, that’s why she said she is going to kick Victoria out "And you can just leave this house. Like he did finally. You're so smart, you know everything". She doesn't take any actions to actually kick Victoria out, she just wants to let Victoria beg her to stay. She wants to be needed for whatever reason. She wants to be important for somebody, and that is the reason she knocks Victoria down by calling her a"slut". She lacks self-esteem,which also leads her drag Victoria lower than her. Although the daughters are all heavily dependent on their mothers,they all have different reasons for relying on their mothers. Victoria does not really felt connected to her mother emotionally, she leaves her mother out of her personal life which is the best proof of that. However, at the same time she needs her mother to support her  financially. Connie is the one who has the most normal connection with her mother. Maybe her mother does not take care of her that much, but she still cares about Connie, or why would she keep comparing Connie to a “better figure”? She want Connie to be ‘GOOD’. Angie is dependent on her mother both emotionally and financially. There nothing more than a normal parent and a rebel child. Connie is in her puberty, so she thinks she is grown up when she is not.
